Wow! What a long day…or days???? Who can tell at this point? I do know that I haven't slept since Thursday night. My computer tells me that it is now late Saturday afternoon…which means that I finally made it to Austria! Yay!! The trip wasn't without some bizarreness (of course). When I tried to check my suitcase, I was informed that it weighed too much. I had to remedy that situation in front of everyone who was waiting in line to check their bags. Fun times. Then almost as soon as I got on the plane, someone's backpack fell out of the overhead compartment across from me…narrowly missing my head as I was leaned over trying to pick up something I had just dropped. There was also a baggage almost falling out of the overhead compartment incident as soon as the plane started taking off. Yikes! It was (obviously) a long flight and I (obviously) didn't sleep at all. There were waaay too many distractions! But I did get to see the sun go down somewhere over the ocean and got to see the sun rise somewhere over Europe…all in the span of a few hours! Pretty awesome!
Finally made it to the Munich airport. It was very welcoming and very easy to navigate. Whew!
The rest of the day was pretty much taken up by hopping from one train station to another. The good news is that I ended up not being quite as intimidated by the train stations as I thought I would be…I'm still slightly confused…but that's nothing new. Ha! The train from Munich to Salzburg was completely full and insanely HOT…so I spent most of that train ride on the steps near the door of the train (see photo below)….
Finally made it to Salzburg but by that time it was way too hot and I was way too tired to want to do much of anything sightseeing-wise…plus I have luggage that's too heavy, remember?? Thanks to an awesome cab driver (that turned out to be a pretty good tour guide), I did get a whirlwind tour of Salzburg…but I wasn't able to get many pictures because of how fast he was driving!
I hope to be able to go back to Salzburg and actually see it close-up once the weather is cooler and one I'm more comfortable with the trains!
After the whirlwind tour, it was time for more waiting on trains. Finally got a train to Linz…and an actual seat on that train…not a spot on the steps by the door! Yay! Made it to the hotel, got a much needed shower…and am now ready to collapse with exhaustion! Hopefully I will be able to sleep tonight. Only have one train ride tomorrow (I hope!) and that's to Freistadt to meet the family I will be living with and the kids I will be teaching. I'm very excited to finally get to meet them! On that note, I will close because I'm not 100% sure how coherent any of this is thanks to jet lag and mental exhaustion!
Goodnight from Austria!!
